Unique initiative for self-reliance,
Handicraft exhibition at Scottish Church College.
Sanchita Chatterjee, Kolkata: Amar Kutir organization in Santiniketan and the traditional Scottish Church College in Kolkata have opened a new horizon for the self-reliant women of the state. Amar Kutir is showing the way to sell the handicrafts and self-reliant initiatives of women from different districts of the state on digital platforms.
This time, a two-day special handicraft exhibition was organized on the premises of Scottish Church College, which ended on Friday.
Women from different districts of the state who have become self-reliant as part of the digital sales training of ‘Amar Kutir’ and the entrepreneurship development program of Scottish Church College participated in the exhibition. They showcased various types of handicrafts including Nakshi Kantha, Tie and Dye, Batik in the exhibition.
Scottish Church College Principal Dr. Madhumanjuri Mandal said, “We are working to involve not only students but also interested people from outside in this training. Today, many people have started their own businesses after receiving training from Scottish Church College. ‘Amar Kutir’ is helping them by teaching them online selling techniques.
Regarding this, an ‘Entrepreneur Cell’ was created in the college in 2024, headed by Lalita Roy, a professor in the college’s Bengali department. She said, “A certificate course on handicrafts has been started since May 11 last year. So far, 63 trainees in the fourth batch have successfully started working after training. This initiative is to emphasize on work-oriented education as per the instructions of the Ministry of Education.
Bonya Roy, an instructor at Amar Kutir, said that its main goal is to make handicrafts business-friendly for the new generation.
