Sourav is now the coach, Pollock the assistant
Sanchita Chatterjee, BS News Agency, Sports Desk: He was the captain of India, the head of the country's cricket board. Sourav Ganguly will be seen in a new role in cricket this time. For the first time, the 'grandfather' of Indian cricket will serve as the head coach of a team.
Sourav is the new head coach of the Pretoria Capitals, a team in the South African T20 league SA Twenty. He will be seen in this role in the fourth season of SA Twenty, which will start on December 26. Today, the franchise announced that former South African captain Shaun Pollock will be the team's assistant coach.
Sourav has come to this position in place of Jonathan Trott. The 'Maharaja' of Kolkata, however, has been serving as the cricket director of JSW Sports, the parent company of Pretoria Capitals, since last year.
Former South African captain Shaun Pollock will be Sourav's assistant
On the other hand, Pollock is returning to coaching after a long time. He was on the coaching staff of Mumbai Indians at the beginning of the IPL, and also worked as a consultant for the South African team for a while.
Sourav's team Pretoria has played in the final once in the first three seasons of the SA Twenty20. In the 2022-23 season, the team finished on top in the first phase, but lost to Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the final. However, the next two seasons (2023-24 and 2024-25) did not perform well - finishing fifth and being eliminated before the playoffs both times. This time, the team is hoping to turn around its fortunes by making Sourav the coach. Sourav is now looking to assemble a team for the September 9 auction.
Sourav, who is serving as the head coach for the first time, was the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal for four years from 2015 to 2019. He also worked as a mentor to Delhi Capitals in the 2019 IPL. He later left that role to take over as the BCCI president. After becoming JSW's cricket director last year, the 'Prince of Calcutta' has now also taken up franchise-based coaching.
