Sanchita Chatterjee, BS News Agency, Kolkata: There is an urgent need for evolving strategies for developing uniform scientific and technical terminologies (STT) for the Indian languages to address various needs of the country. It is necessary to evolve national terminological framework, identify pan Indian terminologies, create appropriate terms across Indian languages and disseminate the same for developing multilingual glossaries, dictionaries, and encyclopaedias of STTs for use at all academic levels in all the Indian languages. Also, there is a need to increase public knowledge about STTs to be used in texts produced in all the Indian languages, develop new generation of scholars who are expert in creating uniform STTs, and provide platforms to create better understanding of STTs among students, scholars, scientists, academicians, officials, and general people of the country. The process of standardizing STTs in Indian languages is an urgent need, for which we have to address all issues for making STTs widely usable in various government departments, institutions, research laboratories, autonomous organizations, PSUs, and others.

The 3-Day Workshop on "Transcreation of Uniform Scientific & Technical Terminology for Indian Languages: Challenges and Opportunities" at Linguistic Research Unit, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, desires to discuss the methods for developing, defining, and reviewing scientific and technical terminologies for various domains of natural sciences, social sciences, juridical sciences, engineering, technology and others. The purpose is to create public awareness about the STTs and encourage people to use STTs in all science related activities. It also looks forward to gather insights to create new STT's, define and evaluate existing STTs, and propose strategies for using STTs in different new scientific initiatives of the Govt. of India (e.g., Bhashini, Al4 Bharat, National Translation Mission). We expect that more than 100 participants will take part in this workshop to benefit from lectures, hands-on trainings, and discussions that will take place in the workshop.
