Sanchita Chatterjee, BS News Agency Paschim Medinipur: The sun dew plant was found in the forest of Humgarh in Piyashala Gram Panchayat of Garbeta No. 2 Block of Paschim Medinipur district. Various curious people, starting from environmentalists, arrived in the area. There was a lot of discussion about sun dew across Medinipur.
The sudden discovery of a rare carnivorous plant, sun dew, in some forests of West Bengal has created a sensation. This plant is insectivorous and its leaves are sticky, which helps in catching insects. Although it is usually found in the Amazon jungle, its presence in areas like Sonamukhi, Jaipur and Bishnupur in Bankura district has aroused the curiosity of researchers.
The discovery of sun dew in the forests of Medinipur is also a topic of discussion in the local plant world. A carnivorous plant that is usually found in remote areas like the Amazon jungle, but this time the presence of sundew in the jungle of Midnapore has created a sensation among researchers and nature lovers.
The scientific name of sundew is Drosera rotundi folia, which is a carnivorous plant and survives mainly by hunting insects. It is named after the sticky drops like dew on its leaves. It mainly grows in soils with poor mineral nutrition, so it collects the necessary nutrients from insects.
The leaves of sundew are small and round. A type of sticky mucus (mucilage) is secreted from the stalked glands on the surface of the leaves, which looks like dew.
Insect attraction: This glue not only traps prey, but also has a special smell that attracts insects.
When an insect gets stuck in the glue, the leaves slowly curl up and completely encase the insect. The plant not only makes food through photosynthesis, but also absorbs nutrients by digesting the insects it hunts. Due to this additional nutrition, it can survive well in soils with low mineral content.
Sun dew is found on almost all continents except Antarctica.
Recently, this plant has been seen in various parts of Bankura, Paschim Medinipur and Jhargram districts of West Bengal.
Sun dew is an interesting example of biology that proves how plants can also hunt.
Its presence is an important part of local biodiversity.
This plant also plays an important role in maintaining the balance of our ecosystem.
