Gouri Sankar Mitra passes away.

BS News Agency: The Calcutta Sports Journalists' Club mourns the passing away of its former Secretary and eminent sports journalist Gouri Sankar Mitra, who breathed his last on Tuesday morning at a city hospital. Known for his fighting spirit Gouri da is a rare breed of journalist who took on the establishment even at the cost of his personal interest. He deeply cared for juniors and taught them the nuances of journalism with utmost sincerity. He was 87 and is survived by his son and daughter.  

Gouri da began and ended his sports journalistic career with the now defunct Amrita Bazar Patrika. He also served as administrator with Indian Tennis Academy inside the SAI Eastern Centre for a few years before calling it quits from all outdoor activities. Gouri da is well known in tennis and cue sport circles. He also covered football and other Olympic sports as part of his office assignments. But he always loved to be in tennis courts and billiards and snooker halls.

Gouri da was the secretary of Calcutta Sports Journalists Club for two years, 1987-88. 1988-1989. Gouri da brought out the club's Annual Number (souvenir), which still stands out for its sheer content and size. Some of Gouri da's wards are sports editors in leading newspapers and some others are well placed in other professions. His demise has left a pall of gloom in the sports journalistic circle. He will be remembered for years for his wit, journalistic knowledge and generosity of spirit.
