Sanchita Chatterjee, BS News Agency, Kolkata, Sunday, February 15, 2026: The first week of the Indian Super League is set to come to a lively end on Monday night. The red-and-yellow brigade is starting its campaign at their home ground at the Yuva Bharati Sports Complex, facing mountain team Northeast United FC.
Statistics from the last five meetings between the two teams show that the fight is quite close. Both teams have won two matches each and one match was drawn. However, the Highlanders defeated East Bengal 4-0 in Guwahati last time, which will surely be on the Torch Brigade's mind.
East Bengal FC: Dream of a new beginning
New season, new hope. East Bengal is desperate to take advantage of the home ground by organizing the team in the off-season. Oscar Bruzon's team aims to play strong football in front of thousands of red-and-yellow fans.
Head coach Oscar Brujon's message: "We are in the first phase of a long-term plan. Our aim is to professionalise the club's infrastructure and create a 'high-performance culture'." Addressing the supporters, he said, "The fans are our 12th man. We want to play attacking football that they will be proud to see. Monday night is our chance to set the tone for the entire season."
Midfielder Mohammad Rashid's promise: "I am thrilled to be a part of East Bengal. We came with a specific target, but our focus is now only on tomorrow's match. It is very important to start well."
Northeast United FC: Youthful challenge
On the other hand, John Abraham's team has arrived in Kolkata with confidence. Known for its young talent and fighting spirit, Northeast United is ready to surprise again.
Head coach Juan Pedro Benali's rant: "I know the match will be tough. East Bengal is a big team with history, and they will have the support of the home team. But we are ready. We are not here to have a holiday, we are here to fight. We respect them, but we are not afraid."
