Sanchita Chatterjee, BS News Agency: KKR departed the Wankhede Stadium having suffered a defeat in their opening match of the IPL season. Mumbai Indians (MI) won the clash against KKR by 6 wickets. However, the toss preceding the IPL 2026 match between MI and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede became the subject of intense controversy. After MI captain Hardik Pandya flipped the coin for the toss, a broadcasting glitch caught the attention of fans on social media. KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane called "Tails," but due to the technical error, viewers were unable to see which side the coin landed on. Although MI was declared the winner of the toss, fans on social media accused the organizers of rigging the toss in favor of the five-time champions.
KKR fans noted that the camera angle shifted precisely at the moment the match referee flipped the coin.
Meanwhile, powered by crucial half-centuries from captain Ajinkya Rahane (67) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (51), KKR posted a formidable total of 220 runs for the loss of 4 wickets.
On the green Wankhede pitch, Shardul Thakur (3/39) provided Mumbai with crucial breakthroughs, as their other bowlers had struggled to make a significant impact in their season opener. Neither of the two experienced pacers—Trent Boult (0/38) and Jasprit Bumrah (0/35)—claimed a wicket; however, the tight bowling in the 18th and 20th overs by India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya prevented KKR from reaching the 250-run mark.
Rahane's innings of 67 runs off 40 balls—embellished with five sixes and three fours—once again demonstrated the immense effort this veteran Indian batsman has been putting into his game to excel in the white-ball format. In addition to smashing a magnificent six right over bowler Mayank Markande's head, Rahane struck another six over mid-wicket off Ghazanfar—dropping to his knees in the process.
While Rahane played aggressively right from the start, Raghuvanshi was rather slow for much of his innings; however, he staged a strong comeback towards the end by playing several big shots, which enabled him to cross the fifty-run mark.
In the 15th over—with Raghuvanshi on 21 runs—a lofted shot of his resulted in a seemingly easy catch near the boundary, yet the ball slipped through Rohit Sharma's hands.
