A Major Setback for the BJP in BJP-Ruled Tripura! Tipra Motha Sweeps Up Seats in Succession.

Sanchita Chatterjee, BS News Agency: The BJP has suffered a crushing defeat in the elections for the Autonomous District Council in Tripura. Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma's party, Tipra Motha, secured a landslide victory. Out of the 28 seats contested, Tipra Motha won 24, while the BJP managed to win only four.
In the elections for the Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) in BJP-ruled Tripura, the BJP faced a humiliating rout. Maintaining its absolute dominance in the politics of the hill regions, Pradyot Kishore Debbarma's Tipra Motha party achieved a resounding victory in the TTAADC polls.
The TTAADC comprises a total of 28 seats. Of these, Tipra Motha won 24, while the BJP secured victory in just four. The CPM's Ganamukti Parishad and the IPFT—once an ally of the BJP—failed to win a single seat.
In the 2021 TTAADC elections, the BJP had contested 13 seats and won 9; at that time, the alliance comprising Tipra Motha and the INPT—along with the BJP's then-ally, the IPFT—had won 18 seats. Within that alliance, Tipra Motha alone had secured 16 seats. Although an independent candidate won one seat, he subsequently joined the BJP. In other words, the BJP has performed even worse this time compared to five years ago; contesting all 28 seats, they managed to win only four.
Following its victory in the 2023 Assembly elections, the BJP assumed power in Tripura for a second consecutive term. Displacing the CPM to third place, Tipra Motha had emerged as the principal opposition party. Although Tipra Motha subsequently joined the state government, the BJP and Tipra Motha failed to reach an accord regarding the TTAADC elections. In the current polls, the BJP proved utterly incapable of putting up a fight against Tipra Motha.
