Sanchita Chatterjee, BS News Agency: Following Mamata's Warning, Outgoing MLA Monirul Withdraws Nomination; Declares He Will Campaign for the Candidate Chosen by the Party Supremo!
On Monday, Monirul Islam announced that, "heeding the words" of Mamata Banerjee, he would no longer contest the election independently. Instead, he will hit the campaign trail to seek votes for Amirul—the candidate selected by the party supremo for the Farakka constituency. Murshidabad's Farakka MLA, Monirul Islam, withdrew his nomination immediately after the party chief issued a stern warning of expulsion. Having been denied a party ticket, he had previously declared his intention to run as an independent candidate. However, the outgoing MLA backed down following a cautionary message delivered by Mamata during a rally in Murshidabad on Sunday. For this election cycle, the Trinamool Congress has fielded Amirul Islam as its candidate for the Farakka seat. Angered by this decision, Monirul had resolved to contest the election as an independent candidate. He had even indicated that he might step in as the Congress candidate for Farakka, given the uncertainty surrounding the nomination of the party's original choice, Mahtab Sheikh, due to complications regarding his SIR (Service Identity Record). Although the issues regarding Mahtab's documentation were resolved on Sunday, Monirul—still determined to contest—had stated that he would proceed to run as an independent candidate. However, speaking at an election rally in Shamsherganj, Mamata declared: "I am addressing the MLA of Farakka; I have received reports that he has filed his nomination papers [after] failing to secure a party ticket... I am instructing him to withdraw his nomination immediately. Should he fail to do so, I hereby direct Khalilur Rahman—the President of the Jangipur Organizational District Trinamool Congress and Member of Parliament—to expel him from the party."
