After Abhishek, Rajiv, Shobhan-Kunal's security cut, house guard removed from Lalbazar
After the change of government, the state government has removed Abhishek Banerjee's security. Police security in front of the Trinamool leader's house has been withdrawn. The names of Rajeev Kumar, Sovan Chatterjee, and Kunal Ghosh have now been added to the list of individuals facing security cutbacks. Preliminary reports indicate that, in addition to Rajeev, security details have been withdrawn from the residences of ten other Trinamool leaders and former ministers. Lalbazar has removed their house guards.
Shortly after the BJP formed the government in the state, the security cover provided to Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee was curtailed. During the Trinamool regime, he received security protection directly from the state government. Furthermore, his residence was virtually enveloped in a blanket of security. Questions had been raised as to why he—being merely a Member of Parliament rather than a Union Minister—should receive such extensive security. Lalbazar subsequently conveyed the message that, henceforth, Abhishek would receive security commensurate with the standard protocol for a Member of Parliament—no more, no less.
The house guards assigned to MP Kalyan Banerjee and MLA Kunal Ghosh have been withdrawn. The list of affected individuals also includes Chandrima Bhattacharya, Arup Biswas, and Subrata Bakshi. It has been alleged that, during the Trinamool administration, many individuals received security protection far in excess of what was actually required. These security details have now been scaled back.
Speculation had been rife that the security cover for other Trinamool Congress leaders and former ministers might also be curtailed. It has now been confirmed that, in addition to Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Kumar, the security details for ten other Trinamool leaders have been reduced. The house guards assigned to MP Kalyan Banerjee and MLA Kunal Ghosh have been removed. The list of those affected also includes Chandrima Bhattacharya, Arup Biswas, and Subrata Bakshi. As previously noted, allegations persisted that, during the Trinamool era, many individuals enjoyed security protection far beyond their actual requirements; these security details have now been curtailed.
Rajeev Kumar and Kalyan Banerjee will continue to receive security protection in their capacity as Members of Parliament. Kunal Ghosh currently serves as a Trinamool MLA in the state legislature; he will receive security protection befitting his status as an MLA. Former state ministers Arup Biswas and Chandrima Bhattacharya were defeated in the recent elections; consequently, their security details have been withdrawn in accordance with that change in status. Lalbazar has also confirmed that the security cover for Piyush Pandey—the current Director of Security, who previously served as the Acting Director General of Police (DGP)—has been scaled back as well.
