Police visited on Monday; today, a bulldozer arrived right in front of Abhishek's residence! Is a Municipal Notice behind this?

Sanchita Chatterjee, BS News Agency: A stir was already brewing following the issuance of a "Bulldozer Notice" by the Municipal Corporation regarding 'Shantiniketan'—the South Kolkata residence of Trinamool's All-India General Secretary, Abhishek Banerjee. Against this backdrop, extreme tension gripped the locality on Tuesday when a bulldozer actually appeared and parked right in front of his home. Naturally, questions began to arise: would Abhishek Banerjee's house now be demolished? However, ultimately, no such incident occurred. It was subsequently revealed that the bulldozer had arrived in the area for a completely unrelated government project.

'Shantiniketan'—Abhishek Banerjee's palatial multi-storied residence—is situated on Harish Mukherjee Road. This is the home where the top Trinamool leader resides with his family. According to municipal sources, during the construction of the building, several sections were built "beyond the approved plan"—or illegally—deviating from the original architectural blueprint. It was for this very reason that the municipal corporation issued the aforementioned notice. The notice explicitly stated that if Abhishek Banerjee did not take the initiative to demolish the illegal sections himself within a specified timeframe, the municipal corporation would step in and raze them using a bulldozer.

Upon receiving this demolition notice for his own home, Abhishek naturally expressed his vehement outrage. He categorically asserted that the BJP was engaging in this brand of "dirty politics" solely to satisfy its agenda of political vendetta. Amidst this ongoing standoff, passersby and political activists alike were left stunned on Tuesday when they suddenly spotted a municipal bulldozer parked in front of his residence.

However, sources within the municipal corporation and the local administration subsequently clarified that the bulldozer had not been brought to demolish Abhishek Banerjee's house; rather, it was deployed to the area for a routine civic operation aimed at easing traffic congestion on Harish Mukherjee Road. Municipal officials explained that work is currently underway to replace the old paver blocks on the footpath located on the opposite side of the road. The municipal bulldozer was being utilized specifically to lift and remove the old bricks and concrete slabs from the roadway. Consequently, speculation regarding the demolition of the house has temporarily subsided.

Amidst this, a fresh air of mystery emerged on Monday surrounding the sudden arrival of a group of police officers at Abhishek's residence. It has been reported that the police team which entered Abhishek Banerjee's home that day was not uniformly clad in standard khaki uniforms; while some officers were seen in plain clothes, others wore the familiar white uniform of the Kolkata Police. Upon exiting the residence, they were observed carrying away a large LED monitor.

Notably, a police team had visited Abhishek Banerjee's residence on a previous occasion as well. During that visit, several scanner units were removed from his home. It subsequently came to light that those scanners were, in fact, government property and were retrieved in strict accordance with established protocols. The police administration had originally installed these scanners at the location primarily for security purposes. However, it goes without saying that the consecutive days of heightened police activity—followed immediately by the appearance of a bulldozer in front of the house—have caused both security tensions and the political temperature along Harish Mukherjee Road to escalate sharply and abruptly.
