Sanchita Chatterjee, BS News Agency: The IPL is synonymous with a blend of glamour and excitement. However, beneath the surface of this thrill, every move made by the players remains under the strict scrutiny of cameras. It was precisely this surveillance that captured Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag engaging in an act that has landed him in a major controversy. The young star now faces disciplinary action from the BCCI for the offense of illicitly 'vaping'—or using an e-cigarette—while seated in the dressing room. His conduct has not only sparked criticism within the cricketing fraternity but has also reignited questions regarding the necessity of discipline on the playing field.

The incident occurred during the Rajasthan Royals' match against the Punjab Kings in Mullanpur. While the game was in progress, TV cameras suddenly captured Riyan Parag using an e-cigarette or vape while seated in the Rajasthan Royals' dressing room. Within moments, the video went viral across social media platforms. Cricket enthusiasts were left astonished by such irresponsible behavior from a captain, displayed before an audience of millions. From fans to former cricketers, everyone severely criticized Riyan's actions, raising the question: is such conduct befitting of an ideal leader? Taking the matter seriously, the BCCI has initiated strict disciplinary measures. Riyan Parag has been found guilty of breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. The Board announced that Parag committed a 'Level 1' offense under Article 2.1, which primarily pertains to conduct that brings the game into disrepute. As a penalty, a directive has been issued to deduct 25 percent of his match fee. Riyan Parag has admitted to his error and has accepted the fine imposed by the Match Referee. As per the regulations, the Match Referee's decision is considered final in cases involving Level 1 offenses.

A captain is regarded as a 'role model'—an ideal figure—for the young players within the team as well as for countless teenage fans. In a world-class tournament like the IPL, smoking inside the dressing room is not merely a violation of the rules; it also conveys a profoundly negative message to the future generation. According to cricket experts, Riyan's lack of discipline—despite leading a major franchise like the Rajasthan Royals—is deeply disappointing. The BCCI's swift action serves as a stern message to other players as well: any act that tarnishes the dignity of the sport will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Riyan Parag has been in magnificent form with both bat and ball this season. As captain, he has also steered the team to a strong position. However, this single controversy has cast a shadow over his otherwise stellar performance. While a 25 percent match fee deduction may not constitute a significant financial loss for him, the stain left upon his professional reputation as a captain will not be easily erased. The incident involving Riyan Parag serves as a lesson to all cricketers: success on the field of play must be accompanied by equal restraint and discipline in one's conduct off the field.
