Less than 24 hours after that viral post, the 'Grass-flower' camp took severe disciplinary action against him. Debangshu was abruptly removed from the crucial position of State Chairperson of the TMC Social Media Cell. Upasana Choudhury has been appointed as the new Chairperson in his place.
Debangshu Bhattacharya, who shot to fame overnight with the 2021 'Khela Hobe' (Game On) slogan, was a pillar of the Trinamool IT cell. Yet, he had receded into the background after the 2021 elections. Amidst the party's deep crisis, he vented his frustration over the defections of leaders like Sudip and Sayani, indirectly putting his own party's top leadership in the dock. He wrote on Facebook, "In 2021, the party welcomed 'traitors' by rolling out the red carpet; the message that one can reign during good times even after abandoning the party in times of trouble laid the foundation for today's consequences." Political circles believe that the party's top brass—based at Kalighat and Camac Street—did not take kindly to Debangshu's dissenting introspection and controversial remarks amidst the massive fragmentation of the party. Consequently, he was stripped of his authority over the IT cell within 24 hours. A new directive issued by the party announced that Upasana Choudhury would henceforth handle the responsibilities of the social media cell. She had long played a pivotal role in the Trinamool's digital and social media wing. By selecting Upasana—known as a highly trusted and loyal aide to the camps led by Subrata Bakshi and Mamata—as Debanshu's replacement, the party sent a clear message: those who publicly question party policy during these trying times will not be tolerated under any circumstances. From the removal of Sudip and Saayoni to the rise of Kunal and Arnab, and finally the 'mega-wicket' fall of Debanshu Bhattacharya, these successive internal 'surgical strikes' within the Trinamool starkly expose the deep-seated factionalism and instability plaguing the 'Twin-Flower' camp in Bengal.
