Finally, Abhishek's Parents Move the High Court

Bibhash Lodh, BS News Agency: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is under the control of the Trinamool Congress. However, following the change of regime in the state, the KMC became proactive regarding illegal constructions. In this context, notices were issued to multiple addresses regarding the demolition of illegal structures. Furthermore, the State Government itself carried out the demolition of illegal constructions using bulldozers in various parts of Kolkata. Now, the parents of Trinamool's All India General Secretary, Abhishek Banerjee—his father, Amit Banerjee, and his mother, Lata Banerjee—have approached the Calcutta High Court. On Monday, they filed a petition in the High Court seeking to quash the notice issued by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. They contend that their residence at 29-C, Harish Chatterjee Street, was constructed legally. They argue that the KMC has issued a notice alleging illegal construction within a house that was, in fact, built in full compliance with the law; therefore, the Corporation's notice should be set aside. Following the change of government in the state, the KMC had issued notices regarding illegal constructions at several properties owned by Abhishek. These notices directed the demolition of the alleged illegal structures within the premises. A similar notice was also served regarding Abhishek's residence in Santiniketan. A few days ago, Abhishek had lost his temper when questioned by journalists regarding this matter; he stated that the KMC must first specify exactly which portion of the building is deemed illegal, only then would he offer any comments. Now, Abhishek's parents have informed the Calcutta High Court that the KMC has issued a notice concerning their residence at 29-C, Harish Chatterjee Street. In their petition, they assert that the house was constructed legally, yet the Corporation has nonetheless issued a notice alleging illegal construction. Consequently, they pray that the said notice be quashed. The case is likely to be heard by a vacation bench of the High Court this coming Wednesday. It now remains to be seen what directives the High Court issues in response to the petition filed by Abhishek's parents.
