Trains to reach Gangasagar too!

Sanchita Chatterjee, BS News Agency: A mega meeting at Nabanna seals a ₹1 lakh crore railway investment—what other surprises are in store? Major changes are coming to Bengal's railway services. On Saturday, a high-level meeting took place at Nabanna between Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. They held detailed discussions regarding the state's stalled railway projects. Resolving long-standing land-related disputes between the central and state governments, the leadership decided to fast-track the work. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari views this initiative—launched within just a month of assuming office—as a reflection of "double-engine" development. Speaking at a press conference, he stated that projects stalled for years due to a lack of coordination between the Centre and the State during the previous administration would now proceed rapidly.

Several major commitments emerged from this first mega meeting between the Railway Minister and the Chief Minister at Nabanna. Sources indicate that an investment of approximately ₹1 lakh crore is set to flow into West Bengal's railway system. The Railway Minister noted that to sustain this pace of development, the state government has pledged to promptly provide the necessary land and No Objection Certificates (NOCs)—matters that had previously been held up by various complications.

On the infrastructure front, the most significant announcement concerns the bullet train. Plans are reportedly in place to extend the service—originally connecting Delhi and Varanasi—all the way to Siliguri. Additionally, work on the East-West Freight Corridor, stretching from Dankuni to Uttar Pradesh, is set to be completed quickly and without further obstacles.

It has also been revealed that the Railways has decided to modernize 102 stations under the 'Amrit Bharat Station' scheme to enhance passenger service quality. Alongside this, 538 railway overbridges and subways will be constructed across various parts of the state. The Kolkata Metro is also undergoing a major overhaul, with 60 new, modern trains scheduled to be introduced over the next five years.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari stated that their primary goal is to bring areas previously absent from the railway map—such as Jangalmahal, Gangasagar, the Sundarbans, and Nandigram—under the ambit of railway services. He further noted that the volume of central allocations has increased significantly over the past year. The railway and state administrations have decided to join forces to accelerate projects that have been stalled for a long time. The people of West Bengal are now keenly watching to see how quickly this new coordination between the Centre and the state can bring about changes in the region's transport system.
