Among the deceased were two employees of the aircraft manufacturer, Boeing. Colonel James Heald of Edwards Air Force Base stated at a press briefing, "We are facing a terrible tragedy. We have lost eight great Americans." The victims included military personnel, government civilians, and employees of government contracting firms. How the Nuclear-Capable B-52 Bomber Crashed
The accident occurred at 11:20 AM local time on Monday during a routine test mission. Following the crash, massive plumes of thick black smoke billowed into the sky, visible from a great distance. The incident was contained entirely within the airbase's runway area. Base operations were temporarily suspended following the event. The aircraft was supporting the base's radar modernization program; it caught fire and crashed immediately after takeoff. Edwards Air Force Base, located in the Mojave Desert about 160 kilometers north of Los Angeles, was closed after the accident, and all incoming flights were diverted to alternative destinations. Additionally, entry for non-commercial visitors was temporarily suspended to allow focus on emergency response efforts. Preliminary assessments by base authorities indicated there was no chance of survival. Families of the deceased are being contacted, and their identities will be released 24 hours after formal notification. Following a preliminary review of video footage, the accident has been classified as "unsalvageable and non-survivable." However, the cause of the crash has not yet been determined. Officials stated that the preliminary investigation could take up to 30 days, while the detailed inquiry into the cause might extend beyond six months.
Notably, this aircraft is capable of flying at altitudes of up to 50,000 feet and carrying approximately 70,000 pounds (32,000 kg) of weaponry. Its payload capacity includes hundreds of conventional bombs and 32 nuclear cruise missiles. With aerial refueling capabilities, its operational range is virtually limitless. A B-52 typically carries a five-member crew: aircraft commander, pilot, radar navigator, navigator, and electronic warfare officer.
