"I am bound by the Constitution, so..." – Suvendu Adhikari tells Bhabanipur voters; a hint is enough for the wise.

Sanchita Chatterjee, BS News Agency: Suvendu Adhikari highlighted his government's actions regarding the slaughter of animals in public spaces and outlined several measures taken since assuming office. He addressed the voters of Bhabanipur—a constituency that was once a stronghold of the TMC and former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, but where Suvendu defeated Mamata in the 2026 Assembly elections. Suvendu discussed various decisions he had taken as Chief Minister of Bengal with the Bhabanipur electorate. In a closed-door meeting in Alipore, he conveyed a clear message: "We adopted a strict stance on the existing rules regarding animal slaughter and directed the implementation of the new Act. I cannot say anything more because I am bound by the Constitution. A hint is enough for the wise."

**Implementation of the Animal Slaughter Control Act**

Suvendu Adhikari was referring to the BJP government's directives to strictly enforce the West Bengal Animal Slaughter Control Act, 1950. These measures include banning animal slaughter in public places and making a fitness certificate mandatory prior to slaughter. At the same meeting, the Chief Minister also remarked that while one should respect all religions, roads should not be blocked. Suvendu also took aim at the Left and the TMC. Targeting previous governments, he said, "West Bengal lagged behind during the Left Front's rule. Under the Left government, only party offices were built. The TMC government engaged in the politics of appeasement, and funds from the 'Lakshmir Bhandar' scheme were being given to infiltrators."

**Steps taken to strengthen border fencing**

Detailing the measures taken to curb infiltration, Suvendu Adhikari stated that the very first step his government took was to provide land to the Border Security Force (BSF) to strengthen border fencing. He said, “We will not allow infiltration. Hindu refugees are welcome. We have already identified infiltrators, placed them in detention centers, and subsequently sent them back.” Detailing his government's measures over the past two months, Suvendu Adhikari stated, “The BNS has already been implemented in the state. Census operations have commenced. The Legislative Assembly has also passed an ‘Anti-Goonda Bill’ to penalize hooligans, ensuring that business activities remain undisturbed. If any miscreant attempts to damage your property, a fine amounting to three times the value of the damage will be recovered from the accused.”

What did Suvendu say about the UCC?
Suvendu Adhikari also reiterated his government's stance on implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in West Bengal. He said, “A committee has been constituted under the leadership of retired Justice Ranjana Desai, and the Uniform Civil Code will be implemented in the state once its report is submitted.”

Transparency introduced in the recruitment process – Suvendu
Former Chief Secretary Dushyant Nariala has been appointed as the Chairman of the School Service Commission in Bengal. Commenting on this, Suvendu Adhikari said, “We had made a firm commitment to the people of the state that complete transparency would be brought to the recruitment process and that the recruitment commission would be restructured on the UPSC model, free from political influence. Therefore, when the Finance Minister announced in the budget speech that appointments would be made to vacant posts, we pledged that no political figure would be part of any recruitment-related committee. Our government is determined to fulfill that promise at all costs. To achieve this goal, we have taken a crucial step today. To ensure transparency and impartiality in the recruitment process of the West Bengal Central School Service Commission (WBCSSC), the responsibility of the Commission's Chairman has been entrusted to a highly experienced and senior IAS officer, Shri Dushyant Nariala.” Also Read: No respite for goons!
