History has changed! 'Kerala' has been erased from the map, a new state was born with the President's signature?

Bibhash Lodh, BS News Agency: A historic change has taken place in the map of the country. President Droupadi Murmu has given her assent to 'The Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026'. After the bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday and the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, it became a full-fledged law with the final approval of the President. As a result of this law, which was passed under Article 3 of the Constitution, the name 'Kerala' in the First Schedule has been changed to 'Keralaam' in official documents. The Modi government took this step based on a resolution unanimously passed in the Kerala Assembly in 2024.

However, a sharp political controversy has arisen at the time of this reception. State BJP President Rajiv Chandrasekhar expressed his anger over the absence of Left (LDF) and Congress (UDF) MPs in Parliament during the passage of the bill. He termed it a victory for the long-standing demands of the common people and strongly criticised the opposition's boycott as "shameful politics". Despite the absence of opposition parties, the passage of the bill finally gave legal recognition to the long-standing passion for literature and culture of Kerala. From now on, the state will be known as 'Keralaam' in the Indian Constitution and in all government functions.
