The court gave 'appropriate' punishment to the husband and mother-in-law after four years of her death.

BS News Agency: An allegation of continuous torture was made against the in-laws for demanding dowry. The housewife was brutally tortured day after day for not being able to pay four lakh rupees. The housewife committed suicide while she was eight months pregnant. After torturing the housewife for demanding dowry and causing her tragic consequences, the husband and mother-in-law were sentenced to ten years in prison by the Chunchura court. In this regard, Hooghly District Chief Public Prosecutor Shivaji Das said that the deceased housewife's husband Ranjit Saha and mother-in-law Archana Saha were convicted by the Chunchura court's third session judge Kaustubh Mukherjee yesterday on the charge of torturing the bride and inciting her to commit suicide. He announced their sentence on Wednesday.

The incident took place on July 3, 2022. Rimpa Karmakar (25), a resident of Ashwini Palli in Barasat, North 24 Parganas, was married to Ranjit Sahar, a resident of Rabindra Nagar Kalitala, Chunchura. Since the marriage, the bride had been tortured for demanding dowry. The father of the deceased housewife, Shailen Karmakar, said that on February 16, 2023, at 11 pm, he came to Chunchura after receiving the news. He saw that her husband and in-laws had fled after leaving his daughter in the hospital. The next day, he filed a complaint with Chunchura police station.

The bride's father also said that during the marriage, he gave her gold jewelry, a cot, a bed and some money as much as he could afford. When the daughter returned home after ten days of marriage, she told him about the torture. He also complained that he would not let her eat. He alleged that the husband and mother-in-law used to beat the newlyweds a lot for demanding dowry. They demanded four lakh rupees. The bride's father worked as a dyer. He also said that it was not possible for him to pay the money at once. Then the torture increased further.

The chief public prosecutor said that the bride's parents came before her death. The bride's mother-in-law opened the bag to see if she had brought four lakh taka as demanded by the daughter-in-law's family. This came up in evidence in the court. It has been proven that the bride was tortured for demanding dowry.
