"When Mamata has no one left, I will be there to stand by her"—Bikash explains his reasoning

Bibhash Lodh, BS News Agency: He further stated, "If she had assaulted or murdered local CPM workers, and I were advocating on her behalf regarding such acts—*that* would have been grounds for objection. However, if it is now proven that she possesses assets disproportionate to her income, the Income Tax Department and the CBI exist to handle that... This requires a sense of nuance. To object to this merely exposes political narrow-mindedness." He has repeatedly emphasized that one's political party affiliation and one's professional vocation are two distinct entities; conflating the two is an act of folly. Furthermore, if anyone approaches him seeking justice—provided there is no fundamental conflict of principle involved—he will extend his assistance. Advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya articulated this stance in no uncertain terms. In this specific context, he remarked that he would even assist former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, should the need arise. In an interview with a media outlet, Bikash Ranjan asserted that the very ethos of the Leftist movement is to stand by the people. It was during this discussion that he declared, "In the profession I practice, it is my duty to facilitate the delivery of justice, provided there is no conflict of principle involved. When Mamata finds herself with absolutely no one left to turn to, I will be there to stand by her side. The fundamental principle of the Left is to always stand with the people. If an individual is a criminal, their crimes will be adjudicated, and they will face punishment. However, if a human being approaches me seeking legal recourse, I—as a Leftist—cannot refuse to provide that legal aid. That simply will not happen." Bikash Bhattacharya recently represented former MLA Aditi Munshi and her husband in a legal case. This move subsequently sparked resentment within a certain section of the CPM, leaving a significant number of party workers and supporters feeling aggrieved. Bikash observed, "They are somewhat lacking in understanding; a sense of logic does not seem to operate within them. She [Aditi Munshi] may well be a leader of the Trinamool Congress, but that does not negate the need for logical reasoning. In this particular case, the petitioner is not accused of murder, nor of attempting to destroy evidence. Rather, a BJP MLA has alleged that the petitioner possesses assets disproportionate to her known sources of income. Consequently, merely possessing assets disproportionate to one's income does not constitute a criminal offense in the conventional sense. That is the specific issue that was argued in court." He further stated, “If he had assaulted or murdered local CPM workers—and I were representing him in such a matter—then a legal case could have been filed regarding *that*. However, if it is now proven that he possesses assets disproportionate to his income, the Income Tax Department and the CBI exist to handle such matters... This requires a sense of nuance. The current approach merely exposes political parochialism.”

However, in an interview given to TV9, Bikash Babu had expressed a different view. He remarked, “Abhishek and Mamata are implicated in corruption. They have engaged in corrupt practices—both directly and indirectly—under the leadership of the BJP. They are mere minnows. I have previously represented Mukul Roy in legal cases; he switched from the Trinamool to the BJP, and subsequently from the BJP back to the Trinamool. I have also represented Sabyasachi Dutta. While they may politically ‘change their stripes,’ my professional ethos dictates that I will take up a case for anyone who approaches me—provided there is no fundamental ideological conflict involved.”
