Bibhash Lodh, BS News Agency: Fears of Compromised Sovereignty Following Mamata's Remarks at Dharmatala; FIR Filed in Siliguri. A fierce political and legal controversy has erupted over a remark made by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during a sit-in protest at Kolkata's Dharmatala. A written complaint has been filed against her at the Siliguri Cyber Crime Police Station, citing concerns that the statement could jeopardize international relations and national internal security. The FIR, which includes charges of sedition, was lodged by Rinku Chatterjee Singh, a lawyer and BJP activist from Siliguri.
The complainant alleges that Mamata Banerjee's statement has cast doubt on the Constitution, the Election Commission, and the neutrality and credibility of the Central Armed Forces. The complaint further asserts that an attempt was made to tarnish the country's image in the international arena to serve personal political interests.
**Basis of the Complaint and Diplomatic Implications**
According to lawyer Rinku Chatterjee, the former Chief Minister's provocative remarks could foster hostility between two sovereign neighboring nations, directly impacting diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh. She also expressed concern that such sensitive comments could endanger the safety of minorities across the border and incite violence among different communities. The lawyer indicated plans to approach the High Court to seek a speedy legal resolution regarding these security concerns. She had previously raised objections against Mamata for allegedly making disparaging remarks about Hindus from an Eid gathering stage at Red Road.
**The Controversial Remark**
While addressing the sit-in at Dharmatala's 'Y-Channel,' Mamata Banerjee brought up the arrest of a Bangladeshi murderer by the West Bengal Police's Special Task Force (STF). She claimed that after the criminal—who had entered Bengal via the Meghalaya border—was apprehended, the Union Home Minister personally called her to request that the matter be kept confidential. Although she did not disclose the accused's name in the interest of the nation, she hinted at a deep-rooted conspiracy behind the incident.
Political experts believe this remark alludes to the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi, the convener of the 'Inqilab Mancha' in Bangladesh. In March of this year, the Special Task Force (STF) of the West Bengal Police arrested two Bangladeshi nationals at the Bongaon border on charges of involvement in the death of Hadi, who had been shot in Dhaka last year. The former Chief Minister's claim regarding the leak of this classified information has now sparked a major controversy concerning the country's internal and international security.
