NIA files chargesheet in Mothabari case, 23 accused under multiple sections including attempt to murder

Sanchita Chatterjee, BS News Agency: NIA takes another step forward in investigation into Mothabari riots. On Thursday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed chargesheets in two more cases related to Mothabari riots. Chargesheets have been submitted to the court against a total of 23 accused in these two cases. According to NIA sources, a 54-page main chargesheet has been filed against 22 accused in case number 8/26. On the other hand, an 11-page chargesheet has been submitted against 1 accused in case number 10/26.

Charges have been filed against the accused under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). These include attempt to murder, obstructing a government servant from performing his duty, assaulting a government servant, obstructing government work, and illegal detention.

 It is worth mentioning that earlier on June 2, the NIA had filed a chargesheet against 31 people in four cases related to the Mothabari unrest. The name of Mofakkerul Islam was also included in the list of accused in that chargesheet. The NIA is investigating a total of 12 cases related to the Mothabari unrest. With the submission of the chargesheets in these two cases, the investigating agency has filed chargesheets in a total of 6 cases so far.

In early April, intense protests broke out in several areas including Sujapur, Mothabari in Kaliachak 2 block of Malda district over the exclusion of names from the voter list. The protesters blocked National Highway No. 12 and staged protests for several hours. There were also allegations that judicial officers and judges were detained by surrounding the BDO office. The situation quickly heated up. The police clashed with the protesters. The incident stirred up state politics. The Supreme Court was very angry about the harassment of judges. The NIA started an investigation on the orders of the top court.
