In the heat of the 2026 World Cup, Real Madrid has made a big surprise in the European transfer market. The Spanish giants have officially announced the signing of French defender Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer. The club said on Thursday (June 18) that the 27-year-old center-back has signed a four-year contract until June 30, 2030. He moved to the Santiago Bernabeu as a free agent after his contract with Liverpool expired. Konate, who joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021, has played 183 games for the English club. During his time at Anfield, he won multiple titles including the FA Cup and Premier League and established himself as one of the most reliable members of the team's defense. Konate, who is currently at the World Cup with France, is considered Real Madrid's first major signing under new coach Jose Mourinho. The club is on the verge of rebuilding its squad after failing to win any major trophies for two consecutive seasons. Real have already added Spanish left-back Marc Cucurella and Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva to the team. There is also strong talk of Inter Milan right-winger Denzel Dumfries.
As part of the defensive changes, veterans Dani Carvajal and David Alaba have left the club, but Antonio Rudiger's contract has been renewed until 2027. Fans expect the Rudiger and Konate partnership to further strengthen Real's defense next season.
