It is worth noting that on July 21, 1993, during the then Left Front government, 13 workers were killed in police firing during a procession of the Youth Congress. The celebration of 'Martyrs' Day' began in memory of that incident. At that time, Mamata Banerjee was the president of the West Bengal Youth Congress. Later, since the formation of the Trinamool Congress, Trinamool has been celebrating this program on July 21 every year as a party. Meanwhile, recently, after the permission for the July 21 program was not granted, Trinamool rebel leader Ritabrata Banerjee commented on it as an 'attack on democracy'. He alleged that even though this program has been held at the same place for many years, the Kolkata Police did not give permission this time. He said that permission was requested from the police but it was rejected, which amounts to violating democratic rights. At the same time, he said that the alternative venue and outline of the program will be announced very soon. Dilip Ghosh also reacted to the incident of a woman being beaten up in Sonarpur on the charge of being a BJP member on that day. He said that the police should immediately take strict action against anti-social elements. He also alleged that several BJP workers lost their lives due to mob lynching in the post-poll violence, warning that the BJP will stop only after seeing an end to such incidents. He demanded that law and order be maintained and strict action be taken against the culprits.
'July 21 is Congress's Martyrs' Day, Mamata has 'hijacked' it', explosive Dilip Ghosh
July 12, 2026
Sanchita Chatterjee, BS News Agency: State Minister Dilip Ghosh has strongly attacked the Trinamool Congress over the celebration of 'Martyrs' Day' on July 21. Facing reporters in Kharagpur on Sunday, he claimed that July 21 is actually Congress' 'Martyrs' Day'. Later, Mamata Banerjee 'hijacked' that program and turned it into a political program of the Trinamool Congress. Dilip Ghosh said, "July 21 was the Martyrs' Day of the Congress workers. Mamata Banerjee has hijacked it. We can pay tribute to all the martyrs, but no individual or political party has the right to claim this day as their own."
