The tragic incident occurred at midnight local time on Thursday at the Okari Jetty in the oil-rich area of Okrika, Nigeria. According to sources, about 200 people reached an oil pipeline in a wooden trawler and a small boat. They were trying to collect fuel through the pipeline. Suddenly, a large amount of toxic smoke and gas started to be emitted from there at high pressure. Many people lost consciousness on the spot within a moment due to the intensity of the gas. Many also jumped into the river in panic. In addition to being affected by the gas, several people died in the water. The identities of 37 of the deceased have been identified. The rescuers have not yet confirmed the identities of the remaining six people. Illegal oil extraction and fuel theft from pipelines have been a long-standing issue in Nigeria's Niger Delta region, sources say. These risky activities have also resulted in fires, explosions, and the release of toxic gas, resulting in the loss of many lives in the past.
