Tension flares again at the India-Bangladesh border; BGB refuses to accept its citizen amidst stone-pelting.

Sanchita Chatterjee, BS News Agency: Tension has escalated along the international border between India and Bangladesh. A standoff has reportedly arisen between the border security forces of both nations over an individual in the Nandir Char border area, adjacent to Mahendraganj in Meghalaya's South Garo Hills district. According to reports, the BSF detained the individual on charges of illegally crossing into India. During interrogation, he reportedly claimed to be a Bangladeshi national. Subsequently, following established protocols, the BSF attempted to send him back across the border to Bangladesh.

It is alleged that after the individual crossed the border, the BGB and local residents from the Bangladeshi side refused to accept him. Consequently, he remains stranded in a state of uncertainty on the other side of the border fence. The incident sparked tension in the area, leading to a verbal altercation between local residents of both countries. Later, stones and bricks were hurled from the Bangladeshi side. Sources indicate that security agencies are closely monitoring the situation; however, no official statement has been issued by either the BSF or the BGB as of the time of writing. Notably, issues regarding illegal infiltration, pushbacks, and citizenship verification along the India-Bangladesh border have recently necessitated repeated coordination between the border forces of both nations. This incident has once again brought the border situation into focus against that backdrop. The total length of the India-Bangladesh border is approximately 4,096 kilometers. Of this, about 860 kilometers remain unfenced, while fencing is virtually impossible along another 174 kilometers due to geographical and other constraints. Meanwhile, Suvendu Adhikari stated that approximately 4,800 illegal Bangladeshi migrants have been repatriated from West Bengal alone over the past month.
